Haas Automation, Inc. (Oxnard, CA) recently conducted a Demo Days exhibition at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum (Birmingham, AL), a world-class motorcycle racing complex which showcases an international collection of vintage motorcycles and cars used in racing. The museum has a new 2000-sq-ft machine shop for producing components used in restoring the vehicles on display. The shop uses Haas equipment, including a TL-2 toolroom lathe, a VF-2 vertical machining center, and an SL-20 turning center, to machine cylinders, levers and other frame components needed in restoration projects.
These machine tools enable Barber to produce many components that had previously been outsourced. The high-speed VF-2 boasts travels of 30-in x 16-in x 20-in, a 12,000-rpm inline direct-drive spindle, an ultra-fast tool changer and 1,400-ipm rapids. The SL-20 has a maximum turning capacity of 10.3-in x 20-in, with an 8.3-in chuck and a bar capacity up to 2.0-in. Barber also partners with several technical colleges in the local area to educate the next generation of machinists, and uses the Haas machines for various training exercises.
